Top 10 Reasons to Spay or Neuter Your Pet

By Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando Medical Director Dr. Becky Rhoades

pet_vet-icon--01Spaying or neutering is a no-brainer for most pet owners – they get that their pet will be healthier, live longer, be easier to care for, and have fewer behavior issues.  They know the best time for their pet to get spayed or neutered is before a year old.  We recommend four months of age because the surgery is safer and it prevents any chance of an accidental litter.

The biggest hurdle for these pet owners in getting their pet fixed is cost and finding time to take their pet in for surgery.  Did you know we perform public spay/neuter surgeries daily, even on Saturdays and Sundays?  Did you know we have the most reasonable spay/neuter prices in the Orlando area? Make an appointment today for your pet to get fixed at either our Orlando or Sanford Veterinary Clinic locations.

So what is it with the rest of the pet owners, who don’t get it?  Do they want to raise puppies thinking you can make a little extra cash on Craigslist?  That’s very unlikely. Talk with any professional breeder and you will find the veterinary costs to care for moms and puppies far exceed any profit. Or is that they just can’t have their dog castrated (it’s a guy thing).  Well, now we offer Zeuterin injections, a safe alternative to neutering dogs.  They get to keep their testicles. So what’s the excuse now?

Believe me when I say I have heard it all after thirty years as a veterinarian. The benefits of neutering or spaying your pet far outweigh any reason you may come up with.  Here’s my top ten list for why to spay or neuter your pet:

10. Your spayed female won’t go into heat

9. Your male dog won’t want to roam away from the house

8. Neutering your male pet provides major health benefits – it prevents testicular cancer.

6. Your neutered male pet will be better behaved.  Instead of focusing on finding females, they will focus on pleasing their human families.

5. Don’t use breeding your pets as a way for your children to experience the miracle of life. Teach them responsibility by watching a video of animal birth instead. There are better ways in this modern world we live in!

4. Spaying or neutering will not make your pet fat and lazy.  Your pet’s fitness is a result of diet and exercise just like it is for us.

3. It’s good for the community. Stray roaming pets cause car accidents, negatively impact our wildlife, and pose safety threats to our neighborhoods.

2. Spaying and neutering is highly cost effective!  Spay or neuter surgeries are cheap compared to the cost of treating uterine infections, fighting wounds, or caring for litters.  AND MY NUMBER ONE REASON IS…..

1. It’s the right thing to do!  Spaying or neutering prevents more homeless pets from being born, many of which, will one day end up in our shelters or suffer as strays on the street.
