Local Teens Helping Animals

By Nicolle Taylor, Volunteer Coordinator

Every Fall and Spring a new session of Junior Club begins. Junior Club allows teens ages 13-15 to gain hands-on experience in our shelter by volunteering their time to help make our animals’ lives a little brighter. One Saturday a month for 4 months, our Junior Volunteers meet to learn the daily activities of shelter volunteers. They complete enrichment projects and activities, learn the basics of agility training, and even teach the dogs and cats (yes, the cats too!) basic obedience commands, like come, sit, and stay. Over the past 4 years, our Junior Club members have donated over 860 hours of service! Our hope is that as Junior Volunteers graduate from our program and reach our minimum age requirement of 16-years old for volunteers, they will move on to become a regular shelter volunteer and continue to help the homeless animals in Central Florida.
