A Shelter From the Storm

Pet Alliance recently welcomed 16 shelter dogs from Grand Cayman seeking refuge from Hurricane Beryl.

As we Floridians know, it is impossible to truly predict the wrath of a hurricane. While we always hope for the best, we can be without power and running on limited resources for weeks in the wake of a strong storm. It can be a massive struggle for shelters and rescues in the Caribbean to properly care for their animals if they lose power, water, or other critical infrastructure.

While we can’t control the weather, we can give pets in need a safe haven and a fresh start.

As the storm barreled closer to Grand Cayman last week, the incredible One Dog At A Time worked tirelessly to secure travel arrangements for the dogs to fly from the island to Tampa International Airport where Pet Alliance staff would be waiting for them. We received 9 just before Beryl hit, then 7 more as soon as it was safe to get them off the ground after it passed.

Now settled into the Sunshine State, many of these pups have already been adopted!

We are always thinking of our Caribbean rescue partners during this unpredictable time of year and thank them for their heroic dedication to the pets in their care. We’re proud to have been able to offer a helping hand to these special dogs and wish them all the best in their new homes!

Pet Alliance’s Downtown Orlando cat shelter is closed Saturday, November 2.
