Take a Shelter Dog out for Hound Around Town

Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando invites our Central Florida community to connect with our shelter dogs — without the long-term commitment! Hound Around Town offers residents the chance to take a dog out of our Orlando and Sanford shelters for a two-hour-long outing.

Not only is it a good time for participants, but our shelter dogs will be furever grateful for the chance to relax outside the shelter, sniff all Pet Alliance approved place, and get exposure to the community.

“Kennel environments can, at times, be overwhelming for our dogs, which is fair considering that our animals are owner surrendered  and have typically come from their familiar home environment,” says Jennifer Brehm, Pet Alliance’s Behavior Specialist. “Hound Around Town offers them a break that ultimately helps improve behaviors and has them spending time with different kinds of people.”

Simple activities like a walk, trip to the park, or even grabbing a quick Puppuccino from Starbucks can have lasting effects on a shelter dogs mental state. Jennifer explains, “When our dogs spend time out of their kennels, we see a reduction in barking, pacing, and  digging.  And a well-mannered pup is likely to find a forever home more quickly.”

The benefits aren’t just limited to less bored shelter dogs — they get exposure to potential adopters! While stylish and fun, the bright orange “Adopt Me” vest the dogs wear while out on Hound Around Town is Pet Alliance’s way to let passersby know that it isn’t just any ol’ pup they’re encountering. It’s a shelter dog looking for a home.

“For our dog lovers out there passing our pups on the street, it sparks a conversation,” says Jennifer. “While dogs are out on the town, they will have the opportunity to encounter potentially dozens more people who wouldn’t have come through the shelter and could potentially have a chance to meet their forever family.”

Come make a difference in the life of a shelter dog by taking them out for Hound Around Town today! Dogs are available to be checked out 7 days a week | 12-3 p.m. Your first steps?

21 Neglected German Shepherds Find Fresh Start in Central Florida

21 German Shepherds are now safe at Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando.

This weekend, Pet Alliance staff jumped to action after receiving a call that over 400 dogs needed to be rescued from a puppy mill in Georgia. At 6 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, four staff loaded into two vans and made the trek. The dogs were living outside in deplorable conditions at two separate locations.

When staff arrived, teams working onsite brought the dogs to them. One by one, each Shepherd was loaded into the van ready to be taken to safety.

At the shelter, the dogs were cleaned up and received lots of love and attention. Many of them are underweight and almost all are timid and a bit fearful. They spent their whole lives outside and with little human contact. Pet Alliance medical and behavioral staff will be doing a full assessment of all the dogs and providing them with what they need to get healthy and be ready for adoption.

Your support will ensure that these dogs will have the care and love they need. Thanks to you, we are able to care for these dogs and all of the other animals in our shelter. We could not do it without your support!

Pictured below are our volunteers showering one of our rescued German Shepherds with love, attention, and a much needed bubble bath, as well as an examination from our medical staff. Follow their story on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter!

Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month

Kane at Reed (2)Throughout October we celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month. This annual celebration raises awareness of the approximately 4 million dogs in shelters in the United States right now.

The Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando is proud to support this national event by offering $25 adoptions all month long on regularly priced pets (normally $75), age six months or older, at our Orlando and Sanford shelters.

Can’t adopt or already have pets? There’s still a lot you can do to help dogs in need during Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month.

10 ways to help shelter dogs:

  1. Help spread the word! Share adoptable pet photos from the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando on Facebook and encourage friends to do the same.
  2. Ensure your pet is spayed or neutered. This is a vital step toward preventing additional unwanted puppies and kittens.
  3. Create your very own personal page to celebrate your pets adopt-a-versary,  birthday, Halloween or any other creative idea you have! Then ask friends or family to support you. Each donation, whether $5 or $10, is significant toward providing care to pets in need.
  4. Share our shelter wish list with friends and family or start a donation drive. Items like dog and cat treats, toys, and towels go a long way toward making pets stay in our shelter more comfortable. Most items can be easily purchased on Amazon.
  5. Microchip your pet! By reuniting lost pets with their owners, we reduce the stress on local shelters in the area. Without a microchip, only 15% of dogs that enter a shelter are reunited with their owners.
  6. Attend the 25th Anniversary of Furball on Saturday, November 5 at Rosen Shingle Creek.  Tickets are available online now.
  7. Tweet about it! This is a great start: “October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month! Check out @PetAllianceGO’s pets now: https://bit.ly/adPAGO”
  8. Donate!  We invest $356.50 in each dog and $225.50 in each cat up for adoption. Fees are typically $75, we depend on community support for the difference.
  9. Sign up to volunteer at the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. We have shelters in Orlando and Sanford with opportunities in a variety of areas including photography, fostering, helping with special events or just being advocates for us in the community.
  10. Subscribe to our monthly newsletter! It’s fast, free and fun! Each month you’ll get event news, pet health tips and more!
