Central Florida’s Beloved Pet Experts Mark a Special Week Dedicated to Its New “Hound Around Town” Community Enrichment Program for Shelter Dogs.
This month marks 83 years of Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando helping out furry companions of Central Florida. To commemorate this milestone, Pet Alliance is dedicating a whole week to celebrate its new “Hound Around Town” program. Pet Alliance declares “National Hound Around Town Week” from Monday, September 23 to Sunday, September 29, our official anniversary. The week will emphasize Hound Around Town, which is a unique opportunity for animal lovers to enrich the life of a shelter dog by taking them out of the shelter for fresh air and into the community for a fun outing.
Those interested in Hound Around Town, simply fill out an application and watch a video to take a furry friend out on an excursion. Once approved, designated shelter dogs are available to be checked out seven days a week from 12pm-3pm for a maximum of two hours, and they can be taken to any of the approved locations near the Pet Alliance shelters, like a pet-friendly restaurant or park. Participants are encouraged to post pictures on social media with the hashtag #houndaroundtown in order to spread the word about the exciting new program.
“The outing is perfect for members of the community who do not want the long-term commitment of adopting, but still want to help out dogs who need a day out,” says Executive Director Steve Bardy. “The benefits of taking part in Hound Around Town are endless. Not only is a nice day out for the participant, but taking animals out of the shelter environment for a ‘break’ has been proven to improve their behavior, as well as give them exposure to potential adopters.”
He continues, “We are thrilled to honor our 83rd anniversary by creating this fun, new national holiday. By implementing this initiative, we hope to encourage the more than 5,000 shelters around the country to create programming like this that connects their shelter dogs with their neighborhoods and communities. Plus, dogs love being social!”
