Whisker’s Workforce

WHISKER’S WORKFORCE cats are felines that cannot thrive living as a pet in a traditional household environment. These cats are better suited to live in barns, warehouses, wineries, plant nurseries, and earn their keep by controlling the rodent and pest population. Whisker’s Workforce cats want to work for you and be allowed to live a quality life in lieu of being euthanized and all they ask for in return is for you to provide food, water, and shelter.

Are Working Cats Friendly? Well, there are two categories…

Semi-feral: A semi-feral cat has had some contact and experience with humans and has developed a comfort level with humans due to feeding, receiving medical care, or similar contacts, but is unsuitable as an indoor pet. Like social cats, semi-feral working cats make good companions for other outdoor animals, but will likely spend more time hunting for rodents and less time with humans.

Feral: A feral cat lives outdoors and has never been socialized with humans. They are not aggressive when left alone. A feral cat may become more semi-feral in nature in a consistent environment. Feral working cats love to hunt!

A Letter From Steve

By Steve Bardy, Executive Director

This is the time of year I typically reflect on “How I Spent My Summer.”  Recalling the days when returning to school, an English teacher would inevitably ask the class to pen a paper on their summer activities and accomplishments.

As with many of you, I can easily think of all the things that did not occur – including a lifelong dream trip that was canceled. As my sister will tell you, I have always been an optimist – viewing life more than half full.  This has been particularly challenging in 2020, yet all the more important.

Thinking about all the changes and “new normals”, I realized that the Pet Alliance had a pretty awesome summer.  We made significant adjustments in March that enabled us to continue our life saving and prevention efforts.  Like everyone, we had to cancel activities and events such as summer camp and our fall gala, Furball.  They were really tough decisions, but they forced us to, as Winnie the Pooh says, “Think, think, think!”

While being creative and flexible is not new to us, we have never had to do it on such a large, daily scale.  You know what though? With the help of some engaged staff, volunteers and donors, we turned out a great summer of accomplishments that were helpful to the animals we serve and to our community. Here are some of our significant achievements:

  • Launching our first ever Giving Day on September 29, with an amazing $150,000 matching gift.
  • Hosted two large pet food distribution days in May and July with a third one planned for September.
  • Spayed/neutered 750 cats as part of our TNR program. (This is a very socially distanced activity!)
  • Transferred 197 dogs and 150 cats from area shelters that may otherwise have been euthanized.
  • With 74 percent of our intakes being cats, we assisted 832 kittens since May. Thank you FOSTERS!!
  • Adopted more than 1,500 dogs and cats since May.
  • Learned there are many ways to connect with our community, our volunteers and our adopters.

Aside from getting to wear a rather fetching Snoopy mask to work, I have been most assuredly reminded of the good: the good in people — whether friend or stranger. Daily, I have witnessed how caring and thoughtful people can be.  All it took was a small piece of cloth covering my mouth and nose for me to truly see what a great summer 2020 turned out to be.

Sincerily,

Steve
Executive Director

Orlando is the 4th Most Pet-Friendly City in America

The City Beautiful was recently named the 4th Most Pet-Friendly City in America by WalletHub! Our community really is full of enthusiastic and loving pet people, so we aren’t necessarily surprised that Orlando was included toward the top of the popularity list.

With animal parents in mind, WalletHub compared the pet-friendliness of the 100 largest U.S. cities across 25 metrics like budgeting, pet health, and wellness resources, as well as outdoor pet-friendliness. You can read the full study here: https://wallethub.com/edu/most-pet-friendly-cities/5562/

We see just how much Orlando locals love their pets every day at Pet Alliance. From falling in love in our adoption lobbies with their new dog or cat, owners boast about their dog while visiting one of our clinics, or the sheer number of pet parents who support us at Paws in the Park each year — this city loves pets.

Here are just a few photos of just how much fun our local pet parents get up to. We know our pet events may not look the same in the future where we gather together with each other and our furry family members. But the mission of saving and celebrating pets will always unite us!

Pet Alliance’s Trap Neuter Return (TNR) Program Estimates 3,024+ Kittens Saved

Figure 1.1 Pet Alliance 2020 TNR Record for Female Colony Cats and Estimated Kittens Saved.

Since November 2018, Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando has spayed and neutered 2,265 community cats through their targeted Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program.

TNR has been scientifically proven to reduce the number of kittens born in the wild by interrupting the cat breeding cycle. Female cats are able to have multiple litters a year, as early as 6 months of age — while they are still kittens themselves! While these feral cats are not adoptable, we can still improve their lives and help the community with any nuisance behavior as spay/neuter surgery helps stave off hormonal responses which can cause marking, fighting among colony cats, and overpopulation of community cats. Cats are also vaccinated and given any necessary medical attention, likely for the first time in their whole lives.

In 2020 alone, Pet Alliance has spayed 343 unaltered females in our community. It’s estimated that those numbers correlate to 3,024 – 6,804 kittens who won’t be born in the wild in the coming year (based on the average number of pregnancies cats have a year, and the number of kittens born). See figure 1.1 above for a breakdown of the numbers. As with all exponential growth, that number would continue to increase for years if left unchanged.

With funding from PetSmart Charities and Petco Foundation, Pet Alliance has been able to dedicate every Friday at our Alafaya veterinary clinic to performing surgeries on community cats.

This has gradually expanded to additional days of the week and the inclusion of TNR partner CARE Feline TRN days as well. Cathy Houde, the Community Cat Program Manager spends each week canvassing neighborhoods to educate community members, setting traps, and transporting the cats to and from their surgery. Community members have been grateful to see Pet Alliance addressing this issue in their neighborhoods.

“The impact in our target zip codes has been great!  County data does show a drop in intake in 32807 and 32822 zip codes since we began the program,” said Cathy.  “The residents are so happy to see us and thankful for the help and free services.  We are very well received. Some of the residents have come on board as volunteers as well.”

As this program continues to expand, Pet Alliance expects to see the number of kittens turned in at our shelters decrease even more as targeted efforts move across the greater Orlando area.

If you have questions about TNR or have community cats you would like altered, please reach out to Cathy Houde at [email protected]. Or reach out to CARE Feline TRN.

Pet Alliance Distributes 15,000 pounds of food to people and pets in need… and counting!

Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando has operated a pet food pantry for almost twenty years to help fellow community members who need a helping hand. The last thing we want any pet owner to worry about is how they will feed their pet. Any resident can stop by our shelters and receive a free bag of pet food to help get them by. On average, the pantry provides food for between 15-20 animals each month.

Since the beginning of March, the growth in need for this program has been exponential. What started as a steady stream soon grew to a tidal wave of need. The pantry quickly began giving away food for nearly 100 animals each week and on Friday, May 1st a curbside pick-up event distributed 15,000 pounds of food to people and pets in need in Central Florida. People showed up more than 2-hours before the event began and many people spent nearly that long waiting to pick-up their food. The need was apparent to the shelter staff that worked hard to coordinate the event and load the food into everyone’s car. Just as obvious was the gratitude of the people receiving the food – there were many words of thanks and smiling eyes behind the masks.

Help Support the On-Going Need

We are so grateful that the community responded to this need with an abundance of pet food and financial donations. It is because of you that we have the resources and food available to help our neighbors in need. We believe we will continue to see an increased need for this program and will work hard to keep the pantry stocked.

If you would like to support the Pet Food Pantry by donating food, you can drop it off at either shelter location or have it shipped directly from an online retailer to the addresses below. We need both dog and cat food – but the highest need right now is cat food.
