Fundraising for 2015 Paws in the Park

By Signature Events Manager & Outreach Helen Preston

PITP patty and kerriCongratulations on registering for the Pet Alliance’s 2015 Paws in the Park festival! If you haven’t signed up yet, you’re missing out! Learn more about the great things happening at Lake Eola on February 14, 2015, and register to walk in Central Florida’s largest and oldest pet walk here.

Paws in the Park is the Pet Alliance’s largest community fundraiser. Our organization, and the owner-surrendered pets who reside at our shelters, greatly rely on the funds raised at this event to help care for them. If that’s not enough of an incentive, we have some really amazing prizes this year for top fundraisers, which you can view here.

So how do you successfully fundraise? Asking family and friends for support can be intimidating, so we’ve put together some tips to help you succeed!

Here are some things to remember:

FOR INDIVIDUALS:

  • Set a goal that you feel is challenging yet attainable.
  • If you have not already done so, make your online requests for support as personal as possible.  Let people know why this cause is so important to you and, if possible, include a photo of your pet and a little story about what they mean to you. Share with them the reasons that you care about our cause.
  • Be creative – consider other ways to fundraise as well as asking for donations through your online page.  Do you like to bake or cook?  Maybe you can ask your employer if you can hold a bake sale or cook lunch for the office while collecting donations from co-workers.
  • Find out if your employer has a matching gift program where they will match all, or a portion of, any donations you collect.

FOR PACKS:

Each individual within a pack will fundraise as an individual (see tips for individual fundraising).  Packs have additional opportunities to fundraise as well.  There are strength in numbers!

  • If your pack is formed through your workplace, create a Facebook contest where each member posts a photo of their dog and the dog with the most likes wins.  You can charge $1 per like.
  • Host a group team building event that is also designed to raise funds.  Is there a Karaoke night at a local establishment?  Perhaps you can charge $5 to enter, and the person who wins receives a free lunch. The rest of the money collected can go towards your fundraising efforts.  You can make something like this pretty big if you also invite family and friends to participate too.
  • Create a cookbook that you can then sell.  Have pack members submit their favorite recipe and put them all into a booklet.  Have a lunch where the pack members brings their cooked item for everyone to sample, and sell the “books” at the luncheon to staff who have had an opportunity to actually see and taste how good the recipes are.
  • Ask your employer if you can do a “Bring Your Pet to Work” day for a donation to the Pack.  Pack members and non-pack members can participate.

Remember, these are just tips and jumping-off points! Feel free to get creative. Good luck fundraising and if you have any questions about your online fundraising page, contact us!
